AFP — What It Means in Your Blood Test

Tumour marker results are complex. This page explains what the test measures — your doctor or specialist interprets your result in full clinical context, alongside your history and other tests.
What AFP cannot tell you
AFP is not a stand-alone test for cancer. Pregnancy and a healing or inflamed liver raise it, and a normal result does not rule cancer out. A doctor reads it with a liver scan and your history [AASLD, 2023].
This is a protein a developing baby makes, present in small amounts in adults.
A raised AFP in an adult is often from a stressed or healing liver, or from pregnancy, not cancer. A doctor reads it beside a liver scan.
Also known as: Alpha-fetoprotein, Alpha fetoprotein, Serum AFP
This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What does AFP do in your body?
The value of AFP lies in watching a liver that already carries long-term disease. It also tracks a germ-cell or liver tumour across readings. A healing liver lifts it too, so it is read beside a scan [AASLD, 2023].
What is AFP?
AFP, or alpha-fetoprotein, is made in large amounts by a baby's liver and in small amounts by adults. A liver under strain can raise it.
Why is AFP tested?
You may have this test to keep watch on long-term liver disease, or to follow a known germ-cell problem. It is read with imaging and your history.
What can raise AFP
Common, non-cancer causes
- Pregnancy, in which AFP rises normally — the level is used differently in antenatal care [NACB, 2010]
- Long-standing liver disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, where a healing liver raises AFP [AASLD, 2023]
- A flare of hepatitis, as liver cells regenerate [EASL, 2018]
- Some benign liver conditions [AASLD, 2023]
Causes a doctor will also consider
- Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), which a doctor watches for in people with long-term liver disease using AFP alongside a scan [AASLD, 2023]
- Certain germ-cell (testicular or ovarian) tumours, considered with other markers and imaging [NACB, 2010]
One AFP reading means little on its own — a hepatitis flare can lift it and it settles as the liver recovers. Doctors watch the trend and read it with a liver scan [AASLD, 2023].
What is a normal AFP range?
- India
- No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
- Global
- Laboratories often report against a general figure of about 10 ng/mL in non-pregnant adults, but a stressed liver can raise it without cancer, and it rises normally in pregnancy [AASLD, 2023]
Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your AFP value mean?
There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.
What does a high AFP result mean?
A raised AFP in an adult often reflects a healing or inflamed liver, or pregnancy. Your doctor weighs these first, with a scan.
What does a low AFP result mean?
A low or within-range AFP is reassuring when watching a liver over time. It is still read with your imaging, as no single marker is enough alone.
What can affect your AFP result?
- Pregnancy
- Long-standing liver disease or a hepatitis flare
- How the liver is recovering over time
- The laboratory method — the same lab is used for monitoring
Questions to ask your doctor
About this result
- My AFP is [value] ng/mL — read with my liver scan and history, how concerned should we be?
- Could a hepatitis flare or my long-term liver condition explain my AFP?
What to do next
- Should the AFP be repeated with a scan to see how it is trending?
- Do my result and imaging together point to any next step?
